Dear friend of Crown, please read our newsletter for October 2015!
We normally associate crises with circumstances that spin out of control. But a crisis can also mean a turning point; a highlight or a decisive turn. We do not like crises because situations grow too big, we don’t know what to do and we feel out of control. We would rather push our crises aside as we attempt to get away from it, or we wish it away.
Good advice is to draw your crisis closer and not to push it away. Our life crises become the channels through which Jesus can reveal himself to us. He literally comes toward us by walking on our crises.
The disciples experience this in Matthew 14 when their boat was sinking in the storm. The stormy sea was their crisis. Then Jesus came to them, walking on the water. He was somewhere where they didn’t expect Him to be; doing something they didn’t even know he could do. The Bible says that they got such a big fright that they yelled out:“It’s a ghost”! They were anxious and very scared.
The revelation of Jesus became a bigger crisis than the risk of drowning! The thing that threatened them suddenly became the channel through which Jesus revealed himself to them.
We do not expect Jesus inside our life crises. So in the process of trying to repel our crisis, we also flee from a revelation of Jesus in our lives.
Our own disobedience and self-righteousness or ignorance cause most of the crises in our lives but this does not stop Jesus from still drawing near to us in our time of need!
In Matthew 14, Peter decided to pull his crisis closer. “Lord, if it is really you, order me to come to you on the water.” Jesus immediately reacted to Peter’s effort and said: “Come”. Jesus is practical. He is not busy testing Peter but serving him. Peter responded to Jesus’ invitation by getting out of the boat and walking on the water, but he was overwhelmed by his crisis and sank.
With the words “Lord, save me” he finds himself in Jesus’ grasp. Jesus walks back to the boat with Peter while the wind subsides. The crisis served its purpose. That which was a threat became the channel through which God could work!
On another occasion Jesus was with his disciples in the boat and at sea. Suddenly a heavy storm broke loose over the sea and the waves crashed into the boat. Jesus was in the boat, but lying fast asleep. This is a crisis! They woke him up and said: “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But he said to them: “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?”.
Then he got up and spoke to the waves and sea and it became calm.
The people stood in awe and said: “What kind of man is he that even the wind and the sea obey him?”. The crisis was over and Jesus revealed himself through it.
In our modern life we move from one crisis to the next but the lessons to be learnt and the outcomes remain the same as in Bible times. God is in control of our lives in every situation! It is important to recognize this and then to obey the instructions we receive within each crisis.
History tells of how people over the ages struggle with the concept of trusting in God and that they rather choose to put their trust in the things of the world. Many examples and illustrations from the Bible show how God is our provider and that, even in the modern era we live in, we must continue to trust Him as our only provider.
In the six short films of the God Provides series these principles are clearly shown – God is present in every crisis and therefore He can also teach us something from every crisis.
